The purpose of this seminar is to raise questions about our concepts, about modes of criticism and about literary history in a more explicit way. The course will examine the ways in which texts produce the idea of the nation after independence, the contradictions of the postcolonial predicament, and the ways in which essays, novels and poems construct the field of meanings and symbols associated with national life.
