The American Sixties and the Century's End
SOC399 SP

The course will examine changes in the social values and structure of the United States since World War II with special emphasis on its place in world economy and culture. Primary attention will be given to the global social movements of the 1950s and 1960s, especially decolonization, the civil rights movement, the rise of other new social movements (feminist and gay-lesbian), the Cold War and Vietnam, and the changing economy and decline of the welfare state. The emphasis will be on the social history of the United States, with attention given to its role in global history.

Taylor Branch, PARTING THE WATERS Alexander Bloom and Wini Breines, TAKIN' IT TO THE STREETS John Patrick Diggins, THE PROUD DECADES And selected books and articles on the New Social Movements, including feminism and queer politics.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Short papers, group research and presentation, perfect attendance, a major research paper.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Please do not register if you are unwilling to read all the assignments and attend every class. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
