After a review of the basic psychological and sociological literatures on self and society, the seminar will read and discuss fiction and non-fiction texts. The working theme of the course is "Self and Society in the Literary Imagination." To this end students will read, and discuss, fiction and creative non-fiction works to the end of applying personal and social imagination to the literary. The focus will be on American literature and society. Discussion will aim to apply knowledge of the two disciplines to the literary works, and vice versa.

MAJOR READINGS

Literary works will include short fiction works by such writers as Toni Morrison, Willa Cather, Sherwood Anderson, David Bradley, Henry James, Raymond Carver, Charlotte Gilman, Sandra Cisneros, among others. Some poetry and creative non-fiction works by such writers as Robert Frost, Adrienne Rich, Richard Wright, Kate Rushin, Erving Goffman, Emily Dickinson, and others, will be read.
In addition the following books will be studied, in part or in whole: Karl Scheibe, SELF STUDIES, and Charles Lemert, SOCIAL THINGS.

Attendance, participation, and evidence of regular reading are required.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
