The French and Russian Novel
RUSS254 FA

Readings of four sets of French and Russian novels of the 19th century will be directed at identifying distinctly national versions of Romantic themes and their stylistic treatments. THe findings will suggest some possible functions of prose fiction in two very different societies and heighten student awareness of our own literary tradition. Readings will be from Pushkin and Benjamin Constant; Lermontov and Chateaubriand; Dostoevsky and Balzac; Tolstoy and Flaubert.
