This course will investigate Mahayana Buddhism as practiced in the Tibetan context. After initially focusing on the geographical, cultural and historical background of Tibet prior to the advent of Buddhism there, we will address the pre-Buddhist religion, Bon. This will be followed by the history of the introduction of Buddhism into Tibet and its subsequent development there. We shall draw heavily upon the biographies of famed Tibetan Buddhist sages as examples of the actual practice of Buddhis m in the context of Tibet.
