Contemporary Judaisms in Israel and the Diaspora

This seminar will examine transformations of traditional Judaism in Israel and North America. The differences between the Judaisms that emerge in a nationalized and de-nationalized condition will be analyzed. The contesting among a variety of Judaisms--ultra-orthodox, messianic-mystical, civil/secular, feminist, renewal--will be central to our study.

This course fulfills the "Religion in Society" requirement for the department major. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
