Old Testament/Hebrew Bible

This course is a study of the literature of ancient Israel with a special emphasis on historical context, literary conventions, ritual practices and competing religious ideologies. Methods from the social sciences along with theories of culture and narrative will assist us in understanding what the Bible meant for its original audiences. This multidisciplinary approach will disclose how the Bible as a religious text responds to as well as shapes changing social, political, and economic circumstance s during the long period of its production.
