The course surveys developments in the clinical and life sciences from the early 19th-century to the present. The course traces the scientific efforts to understand human nature and to generate means toward its improvement or remediation of social problems. Disciplines include psychology, psychiatry, medicine, biology, and neuroscience and are examined in terms of their cultural meanings, their consequences for social policy and private life, and their validity as scientific knowledge.
