Mathematical Physics
PHYS565 SP

Much of mathematical physics has grown from the need to solve second-order differential equations. The course will emphasize certain techniques that are employed for this purpose, including complex analysis, Fourier and Laplace transforms, and Green's Functions. The course may be taken by juniors and seniors provided they secure the permission of the instructor.

MAJOR READINGS

G. Arfken, MATHEMATICAL METHODS FOR PHYSICISTS (4th ed.).

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Midterm and final exam. Weekly problem sets, which will occasionally include some computing.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Open to qualified juniors and seniors (by permission) as well as to graduate students.
