The course fills a gap between the critical/historical studies in the film program. The course explores the intersection of film and music in terms of both industry and ethnography. Films and readings draw on various world areas (Hollywood, India, Africa) and on personal filmmaking styles from home movies to anthropological/art auteur. Some central topics include the evolution and production of the film soundtrack, of the musical film and the bio-musical film; the intercultural spread of film musi c conventions as opposed to locally generated aesthetics/praxis; the distinctions between industrial and auteur interests in music; the depiction of music in ethnographic and documentary film; and the evolution of specifically ethnomusicological film.
