Rock Music and Rock Film
MUSC226 SP

Students will investigate examples of rock music by groups and composers who also made films. Artists will include Elvis Presley, the Beatles, the Who, Frank Zappa and the Talking Heads. When possible, pertinent films will be shown.

MAJOR READINGS

Various fan books about the artists listed above. Selected items from the Rolling Stone Encyclopedia. Articles to be announced.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

In addition to films shown in class and discs heard in class, students will listen extensively to a historical survey of rock from the mid-1950s to the present and attend any pertinent films shown commercially in the area.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students will concentrate on critical writings and will be required to write frequent brief reviews of songs and films. There will be two quizzes and a final. Attendance at all classes is required. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
