Gene Expression: Cell Differentiation

A major objective of current research in molecular biology is to understand how a single cell, the fertilized egg, can produce the differentiated cell types that are found in different organs and tissues such as liver, bone, fat and muscle. This course will examine current research that has yielded major insights into transcriptional control mechanisms governing such differentiations. The relevance of these findings to understanding developmental abnormalities, including cancer, will be discussed. Assigned readings from the research literature will be presented by students and discussed in class. In general, students should have taken MB&B208, although interested students who have not taken this course should consult the instructor.
