Molecular Biology of the Chromosome

This course seeks to understand the function of DNA in its structural context, the chromosome. We will examine the elements of chromosomes that allow genetic material to be faithfully propagated and maintained and also will consider how a chromosome's structure and organization influence such fundamental biological processes such as gene expression, recombination, and DNA replication. The influence of aberrant chromosome function on human diseases will also be considered. We will focus on current experimental approaches and also will assess contributions from ongoing genome sequencing projects.

MAJOR READINGS

Handouts from textbooks will be supplemented with review articles and research papers from the current scientific literature.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

This course will include midterm examinations and a final. In addition, class presentations and class participation will be expected from each student.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
