Vectors and Matrices
MATH221 FA
This is a course in the algebra of matrices and Euclidean spaces that emphasizes the concrete and geometric. Topics to be developed are: solving systems of linear equations, matrix addition, scalar multiplication and
multiplication, properties of
invertible matrices, determinants, elements of theory of abstract finite dimensional real vector spaces, dimension of vector spaces and the rank of a matrix. These ideas are used to develop basic ideas of Euclidean
geometry and illustrate the behavior of
linear systems. We conclude with a discussion of eigenvalues and the diagonalization of matrices. For a more conceptual treatment of linear algebra, students should enroll in MATH223.
MAJOR READINGS
To be announced.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two-four exams, homework assignments, final exam for most sections, various problem sets and occasional quizzes for some sections.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Mathematics 121, 122 is strongly recommended as background, but not required. Despite section enrollment limits, this course has unlimited total enrollment. Any students blocked out of all sections should seek advice
from the department. The
department reserves the right to assign students to sections in order to equalize section sizes.
