The Infinite
MATH114 SP

Notions of the infinite pervade our understanding of number, space, and size. The infinite enters different subjects in different ways, and this course will introduce several of them: mathematical induction in number theory, Dedekind cuts in the theory of real numbers, and infinite cardinal numbers as measures of the size of infinite sets.

MAJOR READINGS

TRANSFINITE NUMBERS, Georg Cantor
ESSAYS ON THE THEORY OF NUMBERS, Richard Dedekind

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

To be announced.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students should have taken calculus and be interested in mathematics.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
