Finite Mathematics and Calculus
MATH109 FA

The course will be a blend of discrete and continuous mathematics illustrating how some of the deep ideas of calculus (the continuous) might arise from rather simple, natural problems concerning (whole) numbers, their representation and their applications in algebra and geometry (the discrete). The emphasis is on connections, on how elementary problems evolve into avenues of significant discovery. There will be emphasis on writing. Due attention will be paid to the historical significance of the ideas.
