This course includes close reading of modern literary texts. The content and cultural contexts of the readings will be examined through critical discussion in Japanese.

Representative works by a variety of modern authors.

Oral and written presentations, written assignments, quizzes and exams.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Placement test. Students should have completed JAPN218, or the equivalent. A year of study at the Associated Kyoto Program usually but not always prepares a student for this class. Regular attendance and participation are required.
