This course, conducted in Italian, will examine the literary career of Italy's first great poet, Dante Alighieri, through readi;ngs of LA VITA NUOVA, the RIME PETROSE, and the INFERNO, the first canticle of the DIVINA COMMEDIA. Particular attention will be paid to the development of Dante's encyclopedic poetics by looking at his appropriation of earlier Italian and French poetry, the classical Latin tradition, philosophy, theology, historiography, and science. A course reader will provide critical readings that encompass a wide range of approaches to the interpretation of Dante's work.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
