History of Italian Theater
ITAL225 SP

This course covers the development of Italian theater from the Renaissance to the present. Topics will include the Commedia Dell'Arte tradition; Goldoni's reform of the Italian theater; the political role of opera in the Risorgimento; the crisis of bourgeois realism in Pirandello. Readings include Machiavelli, Goldini, Alfieri, Verdi, Pirandello and Dario Fo.
