The dissolution of empire, Ottoman and Soviet, produced dramatic changes in the ecomonic and social structure of the Middle East and the Balkans, leading to the emergence of new, competing social identities. This course will examine issues of nationalism versus religious identities, class struggle versus anti-Western struggle and the changing role of the minorities, both religious and ethnic, in the larger society in the 19th- and 20th-century Middle East and Balkans. Special attention will b e given to ongoing clashes over identity in the Balkans, Caucasus, and Kurdistan.
