Modern Japan's Economic Development

Crosslistings: EAST303

This seminar examines some of the central issues in the economic development of modern Japan, from the late Edo period until Japan's emergence as a economic superpower. Japan is the only non-Western nation to have successfully developed a modern economy before World War II and to have become an economic superpower since. This course examines some of the reasons why Japan attained this level of development and some of the costs it paid for it.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Three short papers (5 pages) and one research paper (15 pages).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Permission of instructor: preference given to students who have taken HIST226; previous knowledge of modern Japan required. No incompletes allowed for the course.
