Medieval Women

This seminar will encourage students to study all aspects of the lives of women in the medieval world (500-1500). We shall compare intellectuals' ideas about women to the social, economic and intellectual evidence of women's lives. Special attention will be paid to the following women in religious life; the difference that socioeconomic groupings made to a woman's freedom of action; the concept of the patriarchal household; and the varied role of women in economic life.
