Japan is the first non-Western country to have transformed itself into a modern economic and (at least before 1945) military superpower. The purpose of this course is to gain an understanding of how Japan changed itself from a closed country at the beginning of the 19th century to an empire-holding military giant by the late 1930s, to an economic superpower from the ashes of World War II.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
