In this survey of contemporary West European states and societies, primary emphasis will be on Britain, France, Germany, and Italy, with some attention to other European countries and to the European Union. Readings and discussions will focus on topics such as the institutional principles and political processes of each country, the rise and decline of class-based politics, and recent developments, including the politicization of race and the resurgence of xenophobic movements and of the extreme right.
