National identity is one of the most important and yet most complex elements of a political system. This course reviews the various theories of nationalism, and explores its role in the emergence of the modern state, in elections and party competition, and will proceed to look at several case studies of nationalist movements in the contemporary world, including Canada, Northern Ireland, Sri Lanka, and Yugoslavia.
