Much about a city is unsettled and unsettling, and it has always been thus--wistful images of a golden age that never was notwithstanding. The purpose of this course is to explore the nature of the crises besetting contemporary American cities and to examine some of the policies affecting and afflicting these communities. While perhaps exhausting, the course is by no means exhaustive, and both the readings and the topics are highly selective. Needless to say much more could be assigned and discussed . We will focus on some of the more enduring concerns about the city, including the potentials for collective intervention and the ways this intervention is reflected in theory and practice.
