This course will examine citizenship, representation and democratic accountability in the United States. The course will consider the ways in which citizens attempt to influence political elites and the ways in which political elites attempt to influence citizens, comparing and contrasting elections, political parties, interest groups, social movements and protest. We will pay particular attention to the effects of institutional arrangements on the political participation of different racial a nd ethnic groups, different classes and groups with different ideological agendas. A principal focus of the course will be the presidential election.
