The European Union
GOVT106 FA

This First-Year Initiative seminar will introduce and explore the construction of a common and supranational Europe -- the European Union -- from its formation to the post-Cold War period. What are the possibilities of, and limits to, cooperation among the 15 sovereign states of Europe as they attempt to address old and new problems? Topics to be discussed include Europe between war and peace, approaches to regional integration, new institutions and decision making, elite and public opinion, European identity, political culture, domestic politics, international relations, and public policy. Designed to promote discussion and writing skills, the seminar will help students prepare themselves for more advanced coursework in European affairs and for participation in national European Union simulations.
