Seminar in the Modern German Lyric

Crosslistings: COL323

This course includes close readings of works by masters of 20th-century poetry, including Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Christian Morgenstern, Rainer Maria Rilke, Stefan George, Georg Trakl, Gottfried Benn, Bertolt Brecht. Toward the end of the semester, we shall direct our attention to works by two or three outstanding post-World War II poets. Part of the work of this semester may consist of translating a selection of poems.
