The New Germany 1870-1990: Introduction to German Studies

This course is designed as an introduction to modern German history, society, and culture; the emphasis will be on developments since 1870 and on general patterns such as the pluralism of German cultures and states, the
German path to modernization, the
special role of geography and foreign policy in German history, and some of the major issues raised by unification. The course uses a unique blend of historical and literary materials to provide a broad picture of
Germany as it is today and its historical
roots.
