The Medieval Literature of Northern Europe, 800-1400

The course will treat a representative sampling of the oral and written literature of the early, high, and waning Middle Ages, including heroic poetry, the courtly tradition, Celtic tales, and Norse sagas. All will be loosely linked by the themes of loyalty and order/disorder.
