The High Middle Ages: The Culture of Europe Around the Year 1200

This course is an introduction to the culture and history of medieval Europe in the 12th century. Topics will include the specific violences of the Angevin, Capetian, and Hohenstaufen dynasties; the origins of the
courtly love-relationship as documented
in the love songs of the troubadours and in the courtly romance; the fictional violence of the heroic epics; and the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture, especially in France.
