This course provides insight into German-Jewish identity. Essays, autobiographies, and journalism from the Enlightenment and Emancipation to the post-Holocaust period provide the sources for an examination of the religious and social conflicts that typify the history of Jewish existence in German-speaking lands during the modern epoch.
