Topics in Francophone Lit and Culture: Film, Novel, and Popular Culture in Contemporary West Africa
FREN284 FA

This course will begin a brief introduction to the historical and cultural context in which the contemporary West African literary and cinematographics movements were born: colonisation and independence, the Negritude movement, the anthropological films of Jean Rouch. We will then study the works of several West African writers and directors from the 1950s to the present. Our study will be guided by six major themes-the traditional oral culture of the griots; cultural alienation; social and political criticism; women; a return to the origins; the new generation-and will involve various kinds of "texts": novels, films, documentaries, interviews, music, and so on.
