Arguably the most significant of the international avant-garde movements, surrealism embraced a wide variety of artistic practices, including narrative, poetry, theater, film and painting. The course provides an introduction to the movement, its counter-tradition and legacy, its ambitions and limitations, and their implications on the historical avant-garde in general. Special attention will be given to some of the theoretical issues raised by the movement, notably the problematic relationship b etween avant-garde aesthetics and revolutionary politics, representations of the female body and the marginalization of women artists within the movement.
