The Fantastic in French Fiction

French texts that question notions of plausibility have frequently been categorized under the rubric of Le Fantastique. Is this a genre? How does a writer try to make the reader believe that which is thought to be incredible? In this course many questions regarding the fantastic and their realistic counterparts, questions regarding mimesis, will be addressed in readings by Cazotte, Potocki, Balzac, Gautier, Zola, Barbey d'Aurevilly, Merimee. The influences of E.T.A. Hoffmann and of Poe upon Fren ch writers will be examined, and theoretical texts on the fantastic and mimesis will be studied.
