Italian Opera and Cultural History

From its inception in late 16th century Italy, the operatic tradition has served as a multidimensional creative force that both reflects and examines the cultural context out of which it has emerged. This FYI course will explore 10 operas written to Italian texts, through (obligatory) weekly screening of interesting recent productions of each of them, a diverse set of critical readings, class discussion and writing assignments.
