This is a theory course designed for students majoring in English or other literatures. It begins with a study of 19th and early 20th century thinkers-Marx, Freud, Nietzsche, Saussure--and then looks at the transformations of their thought by figures such as Barthes, Althusser, and Foucault. It also samples some of the other theoretical movements that have shaped critical theory in the past three decades, e.g. feminism, cultural studies, postcolonial studies.
