Postcolonial Theory

Postcolonial theory has taught us a great deal about power and its creation, its maintenance and its resistance. This class will examine some of the major issues within the field of power, the construction of the
colonial subject, the role of literary
studies, the discourse of the nation, the female subject, and the problematic potential of postmodernism.
MAJOR READINGS
THE POST-COLONIAL STUDIES READER, eds. Bill Ashcroft, Gareth Griffiths, and Helen Tiffin. The anthology will be supplemented by selected xeroxed articles.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two 5-page and one 10-page essays. Class participation.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Background in literary theory and postcolonial literature. This course counts towards the English Department's theory requirement. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate
directly with the instructor prior to
the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
