Logics of Art and Identity in Modern Literature

This course examines influential texts -- primarily British, from the late 19th century to World War II -- and is guided by a central question: How were ideas about the nature and social function of art bound up with emergent reconceptualizations of racial, national, ethnic, and sexual identity? We will ask how modernist cultural identity articulates (more generally modern) ideas about individuation and affiliation through values of racial purity, cultural inheritance, and political (class, citizensh ip) status.
