This course includes readings in poetry and some nonfiction prose to show how Romantic topics are developed by a line of canonical 19th- and 20th-Century American writers from Ralph Waldo Emerson to Wallace Stevens, and by a selection of less canonical 20th-Centry writers. Topics of concern include the relation of nature and consciousness; imagination as a way of knowing and being; individualism; ideas of freedom.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
