Interpretation in Fiction
ENGL248 SP
The fictional character, narrator, and implied reader as interpreters of the fictional world are studied. Writers' versions of the interpretive act as keys to the interpretation of their works and to the nature of
interpretation in general.
MAJOR READINGS
Works of fiction by such writers as Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Balzac, Flaubert, Woolf, Henry James, Wolfe, Kafka, Robbe-Grillet, Ellison, Calvino, and Nabokov.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Three five page papers and a final exercise.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
Drop/Add form to the Registrar's
Office. This is an advanced fiction course, but students with an interest in the process of interpretation from whatever perspective are encouraged to enroll.
