British Literature: 1900 to World War II
ENGL243 SP

In this survey of fiction, poetry, essays and drama from the period, lectures will focus on questions of aesthetic form and judgment; the social function of art; empire, colonialism, and nationalism; and cultural, sexual, and gender identity.

MAJOR READINGS

Works by authors such as: Auden, Bowen, Christie, Conrad, Day-Lewis, Hardy, Eliot, Forster, Huxley, Isherwood, Joyce, Lawrence, Mansfield, Orwell, Rhys, Shaw, Spender, Wells, Woolf, and Yeats.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Several short response papers; mid-term; final.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
