Modern Drama
ENGL234 SP

This introduction to classic modern drama focuses on such major figures as Ibsen, Strindberg, Shaw and Chekhov, such movements as Naturalism, Expressionism, and Dada, and their influence on contemporary theater. Historical overview is combined with close textual analysis.

Ibsen, BRAND, HEDDA GABLER, A DOLL HOUSE, THE MASTER BUILDER Strindberg, THE FATHER, DANCE OF DEATH, A DREAM PLAY Chekhov, THE THREE SISTERS, THE CHERRY ORCHARD Many others.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two or three short papers. Several objective quizzes. Final project.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This is a SURVEY course. Students who have studied two or more of these authors in detail will find it repetitive, and are discouraged from enrolling.
