Introduction to Western Drama
ENGL213 SP
This course focuses on close reading of a dozen great plays of the Western tradition, with attention to contemporary trends as well. Leitmotifs running throughout the course will include the nature of dramatic heroes
and antiheroes; considerations of
genre--tragedy, comedy, and everything in between; and realism as myth--or why there's no such thing as realism (really). Not for skimmers; students should expect to read play texts with care and more than once.
