The Nightingale and the Cuckoo: Opera as Literature and Myth
ENGL196 SP
The course is intended for those who like (or think that they might like) opera. While no formal musical training is required, it is important to have a genuine love of music--and especially for music that is sung.
Operas that will receive attention
(in full or in part) include the following: ORFEO ED EURIDICE, THE MAGIC FLUTE, FIDELIO, RIGOLETTO, LA TRAVIATA, LA BOHEME, THE BARBER OF SEVILLE, THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO, and DAS RHEINGOLD.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
There will be an hour exam, oral reports and a major term project.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
