Recent American Fiction

This lecture course deals with a dozen novels. It seeks to illustrate the changes in American fiction, concerns and attitudes after World War II. The first half of the course addresses the hegemony of certain forms and issues in novels written primarily by white male authors between 1945 and 1960. The second half is devoted to diverse novels that embody and articulate some of the literary and social forces that have led to the heterogeneity of contemporary fiction.
