The American Short Story: Poe to Updike

Primarily a reading course, this survey of the American short story from its early practitioners like Poe and Hawthorne to Salinger and Updike. It is intended to introduce students to the range and depth of American short fiction and to its principal thematic concerns. Authors to be read will include at least the following: Poe, Hawthorne, Melville, James, Jewett, Cather, Chopin, Crane, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Faulkner, Porter, Welty, Wright, Hughes, Salinger and Updike.
