Introduction to Oceanography
E&ES106 SP

Oceans cover over 70% of the earth's surface. They have figured prominently in mythology, food and trade. Today we know that the oceans are also vital to our weather and climate, as well as being an important natural resource. In this class you will explore the principles of ocean science and see how other areas of natural science (geology, chemistry, physics and biology) are used to understand the ocean. and a three (3) hour lab session every other week. The lab session will include a field trip to Long Island Sound and a boat trip.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Weekly assignments and one paper (oral and written component).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students should possess secondary school proficiency in biology, chemistry and physics. There will be one Saturday field trip to Long Island Sound in April. A $25.00 laboratory fee will be charged to student accounts. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
