Topics covered in this course include the role and significance of larger corporations in the U.S. economy; the analysis of market structure and its influence on corporate strategy--of pricing policy, advertising, research and development, mergers, location, product characteristics, technical change, investment, and capacity utilization as they affect market performance; market failure and the uses of power. Readings will emphasize specific industries which illustrate the structural and strategic characteristics of the market economy; e.g., oil, steel, automobiles, airlines, computers, pharmaceuticals.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
